4. What would you report? What is an appropriate measure of central location and spread for data that are really skewed?
For Skewed Data:
Measure of Central Location:
Median or Mode is used. But we generally report Median .
Mean is not used since it gives biased results because of outliers present in skewed data
Measure of Spread or Dispersion:
Interquartile Range (IQR) is used.
This is more robust than Standard Deviation for addressing
outliers and also for efficiently addressing ordinal
data,non-normal distribution data. Because we are able to calculate
the highest and lowest value with the help of the IQR value(Q3
minus Q1), we are able to find the outliers with relative
ease.
With respect to Skewedness, by comparing the quartiles values with
median, we are able to decipher whether data is skewed or not.
