Answer #1

Madison has a bag with 30 red marbles and 5 green marbles. She chooses one at random. What are the odds in favor of her selecting a red marble?

To calculate odds first calculate the P[ selecting a red marble ]

Number of red marble = 30

Total number of marble = 30 +5 = 35

P[ selecting a red marble ] = Number of red marble /Total number of marble

P[ selecting a red marble ] = p = 30/ 35

Odds in favor of her selecting a red marble = p / ( 1 - p )

Odds in favor of her selecting a red marble = ( 30/ 35 ) / ( 1 - 30/35)

Odds in favor of her selecting a red marble = (30/35)/ ( 5/35)

Odds in favor of her selecting a red marble = 30/5

Odds in favor of her selecting a red marble = 30:5
