Investigators studying exercise habits in different regions of the country surveyed a simple random sample of 421 California adults, age 25 - 35, and an independent simple random sample of 377 Massachusetts adults, age 25 - 35.

Among other observations, the investigators noted that
(i) In the CA sample, the average number of hours/week of exercise was 7.4, with a standard deviation of 3.3;
(ii) In the MA sample, the average number of hours/week of exercise was 6.7, with a standard deviation of 3.5.

Based on this data, the investigators concluded that CA adults (in this age group) exercise more than MA adults (in this age group).

Use an appropriate test of significance to test the investigators' claim, at the 5% significance level.

(a) State the formal hypotheses in terms of appropriate population parameters.

(b) Find the test statistic and the p-value and explain how you found them (i.e., where the EV and SE come from, what distribution the test statistic follows, etc.)

(c) Summarize your conclusions in terms of the investigators' claim.

) The table shows the number of smokers in a random sample of 500 adults aged 20-24 and the number of smokers in a random sample of 450 adults aged 25-29. Assume that you plan to use a significance level of α = 0.10 to test the claim that p1 ≠ p2. Find the critical value(s) for this hypothesis test. Do the data provide sufficient evidence that the proportion of smokers in the 20 -24 age group is different from...

Research shows that young people (18-25 years) devout 10.3 hours a week to physical exercise on average. A measurement made for a random sample of 24 college students in the 18-25 age group came up with the mean value of 8.7 hours of exercise a week with the sample standard deviation of 2.3 hours. At a=0.1, is it correct to conclude that college students do about the same amount of exercise as young people on average? a. State the hypotheses...
