Research Question: Are full-time employees working an average of 40 hours per week?
A health and wellbeing committee claims that working an average of 40 hours per week is recommended for maintaining a good work-life balance. A random sample of 30 full-time employees were surveyed about how many hours they worked; the mean hours employee work is 36.7 with a Standard Deviation of 5.5 hours. You may assume the data come from a population that is normally distributed. Use 10% level of significance
Step 1:
= 40
40
Null hypothesis states that the full time employees work an average of 40 hrs per week
Alternative hypothesis states that the full time employees do not work an average of 40 hrs per week
Step 2 Test statistics
Assuming that the data is normally distributed and also as the population sd is not given, we will calculate t stat
n = 30
sample mean = 36.7
sample sd = 5.5
t = - 3.286
Step 3:
df = 29
= 0.10
t critical for two tailed test = +/- 1.699
As the t stat falls in the rejection area, we reject the Null hypothesis.
Hence we have sufficient evidence to believe that the full time employees do not work an average of 40 hrs per week
