Is it possible to reject the null hypothesis AND reject the alternative hypothesis?

If the alternative hypothesis is: "There is a strong positive correlation between quality of sleep and academic success" and I find that the correlation coefficient is .39 (not strong) what would the null hypothesis be, and would I accept that. The sample size is 60 and the p value is below my level of significance of .05

Answer #1

Given:

The correlation coefficient = 0.39

The alternative hypothesis is:

Ha : "There is a strong positive correlation between quality of sleep and academic success.

So the null hypothesis is

Ho : "There is no strong positive correlation between quality of sleep and academic success.

The sample size = 60 and

The p-value is below level of significance of 0.05

Since p-value is less than significance level 0.05, we reject null hypothesis.

Reject null hypothesis.

so there is a strong positive correlation between quality of sleep and academic success.
