Question 5

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a recessive gene disease meaning that a child has to inherit a defective CF gene from each parent. This means that there is a 25% chance of a child having cystic fibrosis if both parents are CF carriers Hence the number of children with CF (in a family whose parents are CF carriers) has a binomial distribution with n = the number of children in the family and p= 0.25

i. In a family of four (4) children whose parents are CF carriers, what is the probability that exactly one (1) of the children has cystic fibrosis. (2 mark)

ii. In a family of six (6) children whose parents are CF carriers, what is the probability that one or more of the children has cystic fibrosis.

If we denote a cystic fibrosis gene with a c and a disease-free gene with a C (since the disease is recessive), then only a cc person will actually have the disease. Such persons would ordinarily die before parenting children, but a child can also inherit the disease from two Cc parents (who themselves are healthylong dash—that is, have no symptoms but are "carriers" of the disease). Suppose a child is born to one cystic fibrosis carrier parent and one...

The Autosomal Recessive disease, Cystic Fibrosis (CF), runs in Jill’s family. Jill is unaffected. Based on this data, select which of the following statements could be True? A. If Jill’s Paternal Aunt is affected and her Paternal Grandparents are unaffected. There is a 2/3 probability her father is a Carrier B. In the future, Jill’s parents have another child and that child has CF. Therefore, her parents have a 100% probability of being Carriers C. Jill could never produce a...

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal recessive disease. In a South American country, a study was conducted to test the hypothesis that cystic fibrosis carriers were less likely to be affected and die from by tuberculosis (TB) infection. To begin the quantitative study, researchers needed to identify the number of individuals in the population that were carriers, knowing the frequency of the cystic fibrosis allele was 0.1 in the population. After their analysis, the researchers concluded that there was evidence...

Cystic fibrosis is one of the most common autosomal recessive disorders. The carrier frequency in a general population is 1/25. A woman who knows she is heterozygous for the mutation that causes cystic fibrosis (CF) marries a man with no family history of CF at all. What is the probability that they will produce a child that has cystic fibrosis? Suppose the couple above has a child with cystic fibrosis. What is the chance that their second child will have...

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disorder that affects mostly the lungs, but also the pancreas, liver, kidneys, and intestine. CF is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner with simple Mendelian inheritance. It is caused by the presence of mutations in the gene for the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein. A normal couple intends to have children but consult a genetic counselor because the man has a sister with CF and the woman has a brother with CF....
