If sample size is large enough (> 30), then we can approximate the sampling distribution of sample means by normal distribution using Central limit theorem.

But if sample size is small, then we need to assume the population is normally distributed, otherwise the sampling distribution of sample means will not follow normal distribution that is basic need for few hypothesis testing.
