ANSWERED SOME DONT KNOW IF THEY ARE RIGHT

14.24 Using the following information, make a prediction for Y, given an X score of 8:

Variable X: M = 12, SD = 3

Variable Y: M = 74, SD = 18

Pearson correlation of variables X and Y = 0.46

  1. Transform the raw score for the independent variable to a z score.

-z score is (8-12)/3= -1.333

    1. Calculate the predicted z score for the dependent variable.
  • Predicted z score= -1.33x .46 = -.061318
    1. Transform the z score for the dependent variable back into a raw score.
    1. Calculate the y intercept, a.
    2. Calculate the slope, b.
    3. Write the equation for the line.
    4. Draw the line on an empty scatterplot, basing the line on predicted Y values for X values of 0, 1, and 18.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Transform the raw score for the independent variable to a z score.

z-score = (8 - 12)/3 = -1.333

Calculate the predicted z score for the dependent variable.

z-score = 0.46*8 = 3.68

Transform the z score for the dependent variable back into a raw score.

3.68 = (x - 74)/18

x = 3.68*18 + 74 = 140.24

Calculate the y intercept, a.

74 - 2.76*12 = 40.88

Calculate the slope, b.

0.46*(18/3) = 2.76

Write the equation for the line.

y = 40.88 + 2.76*x

Draw the line on an empty scatterplot, basing the line on predicted Y values for X values of 0, 1, and 18.
