Problem Set 2: Linear Regression Analysis

Research Scenario: A social psychologist is interested in whether the number of days spent in a refugee camp predicts trauma levels in recently resettled refugees. He interviews 17 refugees to determine how many days they spent in a refugee camp before being resettled, then administers the Harvard Trauma Questionnaire Part IV (HTQ Part 4), where a higher score indicates higher levels of trauma (Mollica et al., 1992). He compiles the information in the table below.

Using this table, enter the data into a new SPSS data file and run a linear regression analysis to test whether days in a refugee camp predict HTQ-4 scores. Create a scatterplot with a regression line to show the relationship between the variables.

Problem Set 1: Linear Regression Research Scenario:A human resources specialist wanted to know if conscientiousness is a good predictor of job performance. Conscientiousness was evaluated using likert based questions from the open access International Personality Item Pool (IPIP) based on Goldberg’s Big Five (1992). Questions were summed (range 0 – 20), with higher values indicating more conscientiousness. Job performance was an average of several factors, ranging from 0 – 20, with higher scores indicating better job performance. He compiles the...

Problem Set 2: Pearson Correlation Coefficient Analysis Research Scenario: A social worker involved in suicide prevention efforts wants to study the relationship between social isolation and possible suicide risk. She collects scores from a sample of 13 patients on two measures: one is a measure of social isolation on which higher scores indicate higher isolation (possible range of scores = 0- 20), and the other is the Suicide Risk Measure (SRM) (Plutchik et al., 1989), on which higher scores indicate...

CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE Problem Set 2: Chi Square Test for Independence Research Scenario: A psychology student at a university is curious whether students in different majors (IV) have different class time preferences (DV), or whether class time preference is independent of major. After doing some preliminary research, she chooses three different majors and recruits 10 volunteers from each major. She then asks them to choose their preferred class time—either morning or afternoon. The results are listed in the table...

Problem Set 2: Pearson’s correlation (7 pts) Research Scenario: Is there a positive relationship between grit and GPA in high school seniors? A researcher examined this issue by having students beginning their senior year of high school complete a grit inventory using a Likert-based scale (range 1 – 7), where higher numbers indicate more “grit”. GPA was self-reported (scale 0 – 4.0). Enter the data shown here into SPSS to assess whether there is a positive relationship between grit and...

Problem Set 1: (10 pts) Research Scenario: As part of their study on the relation between rejection and depression in adolescents (Nolan, Flynn, & Garber, 2003), researchers collected data on externalizing behaviors (e.g., acting out in negative ways, such as causing fights), anxiety, gender, and age. Some of the data are presented below (you would need a larger sample size but this is for practice only). Select and conduct the most appropriate statistical test to determine whether there is a...

Problem Set 4: One way repeated measures ANOVA Research Scenario: A savvy business owner wanted to assess whether type of background music influenced the amount of money spent. For four Saturdays, he varied the type of background music being played: pop, rock, classical, and country. Amount of money spent (in hundreds) is reported for each type of music. Conduct a one-way repeated measures ANOVA to determine whether background music influenced total amount of money spent. Pop Rock Classical Country 5.2...
