The mean water temperature downstream from a discharge pipe at a power plant cooling tower should be no more than 100°F. Past studies has shown that the standard deviation of temperature is 2°F. The water temperature was measured on 10 randomly chosen days, and the results are shown below:

96.15 97.81 97.09 95.06   99.46    100.03   99.74    98.85    95.08    98.71

a. State the null hypothesis and alternative hypothesis for the above problem.

b. Is there evidence that the water temperature is acceptable at α = 1%?

c. Compute the 95% confidence interval for the mean temperature of water.

The mean oil temperature from a discharge pipe at a jet engine should not exceed than 100°C. Past experience has shown that the standard deviation of temperature is 2°C. The oil temperature is measured on nine randomly chosen fights having same flight hours, and the average temperature is found to be 98°C. What is the probability of accepting the null hypothesis at α = 0.05 if the oil has a true mean temperature of 104°C

Consolidated Power, a large electric power utility, has just built a modern nuclear power plant. This plant discharges waste water that is allowed to flow into the Atlantic Ocean. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has ordered that the waste water may not be excessively warm so that thermal pollution of the marine environment near the plant can be avoided. Because of this order, the waste water is allowed to cool in specially constructed ponds and is then released into the...

Water samples are taken from water used for cooling as it is being discharged from a power plant into a river. It has been determined that as long as the mean temperature of the discharged water is at most 150 degrees Fahrenheit, there will be no negative effects on the river ecosystem. To investigate whether the power plant is in compliance with regulations that prohibit a mean discharge water temperature above 150 degrees, a scientist will take 50 water samples...
