A taxi company wants to do an annual review of its service by checking the number of monthly complaints. The total number of complaints in each of the last 12 months were 15, 9, 13, 12, 9, 20, 8, 10, 16, 11, 18, and 3.

  1. If 3-sigma limits are used to construct a control chart (corresponding to 99.73 percent) calculate the upper control limit (UCL) and the lower control limit (LCL) of this control chart.

b. Examining the data and your constructed c chart what can you advise the manager of the taxi company i.e. is the process in control, heading out of control or already out of control? Briefly explain in no more than 1-2 sentences (60 words maximum).

Answer #1

ANSWER:

(a)

Here we construct a c chart.

Let the number of complaints in each sample be denoted by ci, then we calculate the mean as

Hence the control limits are given by

(b)

It is evident that all the points fall within the control limits. Hence it can be said that the process is in control.

Problem 10-25 Resistors for electronic circuits are manufactured on a high-speed automated machine. The machine is set up to produce a large run of resistors of 1,000 ohms each. Use Exhibit 10.13.      To set up the machine and to create a control chart to be used throughout the run, 15 samples were taken with four resistors in each sample. The complete list of samples and their measured values are as follows: Use three-sigma control limits. SAMPLE NUMBER READINGS (IN OHMS)...
