A new vaccine was tested to see if it could prevent the ear infections that many infants suffer from. Babies about a year old were randomly divided into two groups. One group receivedvaccinations, and the other did not. The following year, only 331 of 2456 vaccinated children had ear infections, compared to 499 of 2448 unvaccinated children.

Let ^p1  be the sample proportion of success in the unvaccinated group, and let ^p2 be the sample proportion of success in the vaccinated group. Find the 95% confidence interval for the difference in rates of earinfection,

p1−p2.

Ear infections A new vaccine was recently tested to see if it could prevent the painful and recurrent ear infections that many infants suffer from. The Lancet, a medical journal, reported a study in which babies about a year old were randomly divided into two groups. One group received vaccinations; the other did not. During the following year, only 333 of 2455 vaccinated children had ear infections, compared to 499 of 2452 unvaccinated children in the control group. Does it...

Does the use of sweetener xylitol reduce the incidence of ear infections? Some children are randomly allocated t xylitol treatment group and other children to the control group (who are treated with placebo). Of 285 children on xylitol, 72 got ear infection, while of 229 children on placebo, 57 got ear infection. Suppose p1p1 and p2p2 represent population proportions with ear infections on xylitol and placebo, respectively. Again p^1p^1 and p^2p^2 represent sample proportions with ear infections on xylitol and...
