Using the CI for the mean formula answer the following question:

Suppose in a class of 60 students the class scores for the final exam in general are normally distributed with a mean of 150 and a standard deviation of 20.85. Suppose the instructor suggest the students watch a video just before they take the final exam to see if the scores increase. After watching the video, the mean of the 60 students increased to 155.67. Construct a 95% CI for μ and interpret the results. (Show your work)

Answer #1

Given that

sample size n = 60

mean xbar = 155.67

and standard deviation sigma = 20.85

z critical value for 95% confidence level is 1.96 (using z table)

Confidence interval =

We are 95% confident that the true mean score for the class is between (150.394, 160.946).

We can see that the population mean value of 150 is not included in the confidence interval, this means that the watching a video just before taking the final exam significantly increases scores.

A math professor has been teaching graduate statistics for several. His records show that the overall mean for final exam scores is 82 with a standard deviation of 10. The professor believes that last year’s class scores are greater than his previous classes. He decides to conduct a test on the 25 students enrolled in one of his statistics class. Construct and interpret 95% and 99% confidence intervals. Assume that the professor increased his sample size to 50 when he...

Use the following information for Questions 28-32. Final grades in a class are a weighted average of the midterm (25%) and final (75%) exams: G = 0.25M + 0.75F. Each exam has 100 possible points. Suppose the average and standard deviation of scores on the midterm were 71 and 19 respectively, while the values for the final exam were 69 and 23. Suppose further that the correlation coefficient between the two exams is 0.50. 1. What is the mean of...

You think that your class might be happier than the general population. You want to conduct a hypothesis test to see if you are right. Thus, you randomly sample 9 students in your class and find that they have a mean happiness score of 3.25, with a standard deviation of 1. You know information about the population distribution. First, you know the population scores are normally distributed. You also know that the mean happiness score for the population from which...
