You have just developed a new cure for the common cold and you plan to conduct a formal test to justify its effectiveness.

Which P-value would you most prefer: 0.99, 0.05, 0.01, 0.001?
Why?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Null Hypothesis() : There is no significance effect of the new cure developed

Alternate Hypothesis() : There is significant effect of the new cure developed

In order to justify the effectiveness of the new cure developed for common cold, we will prefer a p-value of 0.001 which is less than 0.05 and also indicates one in thousand chance of being wrong(least chances or error of being wrong)

We reject the null hypothesis if the p-value is less than or equal to 0.05 , which means we may accept the alternate hypothesis which would further justify the effectiveness of new cure developed for common cold.

We will eliminate all the p-values greater than 0.05 because we fail to reject the null hypothesis when the p-value is greater than 0.05.

A pharmaceuticals company claims to have developed a cure for the common cold. In order to test whether this is true, one group of recent cold-sufferers was given this medicine and another group was given a placebo instead. The selection process was completely random. The participants were examined two hours after they were given the medicine or placebo. 5. You want to conduct an experiment to test the effectiveness of a new fertilizer for enhancing plant growth. a. Explain how you would use positive and negative controls to test your new fertilizer. b. List testable null and alternative hypotheses (one HO and its corresponding HA) you could use in a test for whether your fertilizer was effective at enhancing plant growth. [2 points]

Sharpe Pharmaceuticals has developed a new drug called Zantor that can cure anxiety disorders. Sharpe Pharmaceuticals has a patent on the production of Zantor. Suppose the demand Zantor is given by the equation P=86-1/3000Q and the marginal revenue is given by the equation MR=86-1/1500Q. Further suppose that the marginal cost of producing Zantor is MC=6 and the average total cost is given by the formula: ATC=100,000/Q+6 (4 points) Calculate the profit-maximizing price and quantity. A plan for an executive traveler’s club has been developed by an airline on the premise that 30% of its current customers would qualify for membership. A random sample of 20 customers yielded 5 who would qualify. (a)Let H0: p=0.3 Vs H1:p<0.3. Perform the hypothesis testing in α=0.05. (b)Find Type II error probability when p=0.4. You have joined a small drug manufacturer. They have developed a weight loss pill. In general people do not lose weight. That is, the weight change of an adult for any 6-month period would average zero. With these “pills” for this sample of 20 people they appear to be losing weight. The weight change is in the table at the end of this test. A plus means the person lost weight, a minus means the person gained weight. You are...

As a chemist for an agricultural products company, you have just developed a new herbicide,"Herbigon," that you think has the potential to kill weeds effectively. A sparingly soluble salt, Herbigon is dissolved in 1 M acetic acid for technical reasons having to do with its production. You have determined that the solubility product Ksp of Herbigon is 9.10×10−6. Although the formula of this new chemical is a trade secret, it can be revealed that the formula for Herbigon is X-acetate...

We have developed a new drug and we wish to test its impact on the amount of sleep. We wish to know whether it will change (i.e., increase or decrease) the amount of sleep in patients.   Suppose for a population of adults, we know the average amount of sleep is 8.57 hours per day and a population standard deviation of 0.96 hours. We sample 50 patients in a clinical trial of the new drug and get an average amount of...
