When one thinks of the normal distribution, the first thing that comes to mind is the bell curve and grades. While this is one example of a normal curve that is widely recognized, it is not the only one. Come up with a unique normal distribution from literature that your classmates have not posted about already (for example, heights or shoe sizes). Explain your normal curve with items such as the mean and standard deviation. What do the areas in the intervals µ - σ to µ + σ, µ - 2σ to µ + 2σ and µ - 3σ to µ + 3σ represent with regard to areas under the normal curve? With the mean and standard deviation, calculate what the actual intervals are for your normal curve. Include any citations regarding where you obtained the data for your curve.

Answer #1

The mangroves of the North Pacific of Costa Rica are among the most altered coastal ecosystems in the country. The height of all species of mangrove tree is normally distributed with mean 8.8m and standard deviation 0.6m.

probability that the Mangrove tree height are 1 Standard deviation away from the mean is 0.6827

the probability that the Mangrove tree height is 2 Standard deviation away from the mean is 0.9545

the probability that the Mangrove tree height is 3 Standard deviation away from the mean is 0.9973

This week we study Normal Distribution. Part 1. Demonstrate that you understand basic concept of Normal Distribution. In two small paragraphs describe a couple of properties/rules of Normal distribution. Give one example of some practical case where we can use Normal distribution (for instance, IQ scores follow a normal distribution of probabilities with the mean IQ of 100 and a standard deviation around the mean of about 15 IQ points.) Part 2. Assign your numbers for mean μ and standard...

The distribution of heights of women aged 20 to 29 is approximately Normal with mean μ = 67.0 inches and standard deviation σ = 2.9 inches. (Enter your answers to one decimal place.) The height of the middle 95% of young women falls between a low of ______inches and a high of_____ inches.

Week 7 Discussion The Normal Distribution, also called the Gaussian Distribution, is a representation of the distribution of many different types of data, especially when considering large amounts of data. Some examples of data that are normally distributed are IQ scores, heights, blood pressure measurements and GPAs. The empirical rule, along with the Normal Distribution provides information about the data that is easy to calculate. Follow this link to understand the empirical rule: For Discussion #2, find an example of...

When returns from a project can be assumed to be normally distributed, such as those shown in Figure 13-6 (represented by a symmetrical, bell-shaped curve), the areas under the curve can be determined from statistical tables based on standard deviations. For example, 68.26 percent of the distribution will fall within one standard deviation of the expected value (  D⎯⎯⎯D¯ ± 1σ). Similarly, 95.44 percent will fall within two standard deviations (  D⎯⎯⎯D¯  ± 2σ), and so on. An abbreviated table of areas under...

Carbon monoxide (CO) emissions for a certain kind of vehicle vary according to a normal distribution with mean µ = 2.9 g/mi and standard deviation σ = 0.4 g/mi. What percent of vehicles are within one standard deviation of the mean? Above what level of emissions are the top 40% of vehicles? EPA standards require these types of vehicles to emit no more than 4.2 g/mi.  Would it be unusual for a randomly selected vehicle of this type to exceed the...

A paper suggests that a normal distribution with mean μ = 3500 grams and standard deviation σ = 599 grams is a reasonable model for the probability distribution of the continuous numerical variable x = birth weight of a randomly selected full-term baby. a) How would you characterize the most extreme...
