As a researcher, you want to know whether gender is related to choice of major. Are men and women equally likely to major in psychology, physics and classics? What statistical test would you choose to conduct and why? Describe how you would conduct the test and how to interpret the results.

We use chi-square test for independence of attribute. Here gender and subjects are two attributes.

Gender has 2 levels : men and women

Subject has 3 levels: psychology, physics and classics

To perform this test we first need to prepare contingency table. Then we have to find expected frequency for each cell. And then we compute value of test statistic.

Where test statistic is,

Degrees of freedom = (r-1) (c-1)

Using degrees of freedom we find critical value, if calculated value is greater than critical value then we reject null hypothesis and conclude that gender is related to choice of major.
