As a results of increased fuel costs, the airline industry has been hit hard financially. Some airlines are substituting smaller planes on certain routes on certain routes in an attempt to reduce fuel costs. As an analyst for one of the major airlines, you have been asked to analyze the relationship between passenger capacity and fuel consumption per hour. Data for 17 different planes is provided here (fuelconsumption.xlsx).

1. What is the correct type of graph to illustrate the relationship between fuel consumption per hour and passenger capacity?

2. Discuss the relationship between the variables. Choose the correct answer below.

a. There appears to be a curvilinear relationship between the type of plane and fuel consumption. Fuel consumption increases with the type of plane.

b. There appears to be curvilinear relationship between passenger capacity and fuel consumption. As passenger capacity increases, fuel consumption increases.

c. There appears to be a linear relationship between passenger capacity and fuel consumption. As passenger capacity increases, fuel consumption increases.

d. There does not appear to be a significant relationship between the passenger capacity and fuel consumption.

e. There appears to be a linear relationship between passenger capacity and fuel consumption. As passenger capacity increases, fuel consumption decreases.

Answer #1

Question (1)

Scatter plot with fuel consumption per hour on y-axis and passenger capacity on x-axis can be used to illustrate the relationship between fuel consumption per hour and passenger capaciy

Scatter plot will then have a regression line

Question (2)

The scatter plot with the regression line looks as below

Clearly there is linear relationship between fuel consumption per hour and passenger capacity as evident by the lienar regression line and also as passenger capacity increasesm fuel consumption too increases which is evident by the regression line slanting upwards

So Asnwer is Option C
