Practitioners of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) regularly use a framework called PICO. This helps them to form the question and ease the literature search. The framework PICO stands for the following abbreviations:

P = Patient Problem, (or Population)

I = Intervention,

C = Comparison or Control, and

O = Outcome

Therefore, a researcher prior to going for research first has to find the problem (P), then the type of intervention (I) that is considerable. Third, find whether the problem is considered as a comparison (C) treatment or not. Fourth, predict the possible outcome (O) of the research.

For example, a patient has neck muscle pain due to his/her work. Now we consider strength training of the painful muscle as an intervention. Third, this treatment can compare with taking rest. Fourth, possibly our treatment would relieve the person from neck pain.
