What makes a joke funny? Freud theorized that people find jokes funnier when the jokes contain higher levels of sexuality or hostility. Kirsh and Olczak (2001) questioned whether gender impacts this relationship. The data below are representative of the women in their study. The researchers hypothesized that because women find violence less humorous than do men, there is a negative relationship between the level of violence in a comic book (1 = low to 7 = high) and how humorous women rate the comic book (1 = not at all humorous to 6 = extremely humorous). Test the relationship through both correlation and regression. Was the best fitting line --- good enough? Participant Violence Humorous 1 2 4 2 7 3 3 6 3 4 3 4 5 4 2 6 7 1 7 5 3 8 2 6 9 1 5 10 6 2

Answer #1

Correlation and regression analysis should be done in excel.

For correlation we use function

Correl( array of x(violence), array of y(humorous))

Correlation= -0.80275

So there is negative correlation between voilence and humorous.

Also the equation of line of regression is shown on the scatter diagram and also the R square.

So fitted line is

y = -0.542x+5.6304

Where y - voilence and x- humorous

And R square = 0.6444

So fitted regression line is good enough.
