Can you give an example of three or more independent groups that you might test with an ANOVA? Include a description of the groups and the response (dependent) variable.

Answer #1

EXAMPLE OF THREE INDEPENDENT GROUPS THAT WE TEST WITH AN ANOVA:

(i) Response variable = Time to run a marathan

(ii) Independent group 1 : Gender (Male or Female)

Independent group 2: Body composition (Normal weight or obese)

Independent group 3: Type of exercise programme (Type 1 or Type 2)

Thus, this an example of three-way ANOVA for determining whether there is an interaction effect between 3 independent variables (Gender, Body composition and Type of exercise programme) on a continuous dependent variable (Time to run a marathan).

QUESTION 11 When you get a statistically significant result from a two-sample t test (also called an independent samples t test), it means: Two groups of subjects, in two different conditions, scored differently on a response/dependent variable Subjects scored differently on a response/dependent variable when tested in one condition versus when those same individuals were tested in another condition Subjects who had high scores on one variable tended to have high scores on another variable Among three (or more) groups...

For the t-test alone there are three variants based on the independence of the groups and whether we can assume variances the same or variances between the groups as different. The variances issue is easy as we can always assume they are different as the test is robust to accept any variances but the dependent pairs is different. Why is it different and how might you use it?

The t statistic compares two groups on one independent variable that has two levels. We can use the t statistic to compare a sample that has a level of an independent variable, or we can use two samples from the same populations and give them two different levels of an independent variable. You will design a two group study with one independent variable for this question. Choose an independent variable that has two levels. The two levels can be 1.)...

Select the statement that is true. The independent variable is only used in the independent t-test and the dependent variable is only used in the dependent t-test. The independent t-test is never used in a calculation with more than two groups or sets of data. Independent means that the independent t-test is not related to any other type of t-test. The matched pairs t-test will usually have greater variance than the independent t-test when using the same variables.
