I am trying to solve for population proportion using steps and statcrunch. Ex; I believe population proportion of adults who own pets in the US is 0.35. 14 out of 50 own pets.Test at 0.5 significance level. I am having problems solving (steps to solve) and using statcrunch.
Setting up hypothesis→
Population proportion →P
Sample proportion→p^=14/50= 0.28
Sample size n= 50
Ho:P= 0.35
H1:P≠0.35
Test statistic z= (p^-P)/√(P*(1-P)/n)
Z= (0.28-0.35)/√(0.35*0.65/50)=-1.0377
Level of significance (alpha)= 0.5(given)
P value = prob(z>1.0377)*2=0.2994
Since p value is less than level of significance (0.5)
We reject null hypothesis.
Conclusion:→we have sufficient evidence to claim that the population proportion is different from 0.35
[ for better understanding: Extra→ if level of significance=0.05 then we can not reject the null hypothesis and conclude that the we have in sufficient evidence to claim that population proportion is different from 0.35]
thanks!
