Hi, I am a bit confused why we can not use variance for discrete values and we have to use entropy instead f variance. I appreciate if someone could let me know WHEN and WHY we should use variance or entropy

Answer #1

Both the measures: Variance and Entropy are used for uncertainly evaluation.

Variance is given by:

.

The variance obtains the spread of the values around the mean.

The entropy is given by:

The entropy is one that maximises when each of the outcomes occurs with the same probability, i.e., lot of uncertainty and minimises when there is only a single outcome. i.e., no uncertainty.

The difference between Variance and Entropy is:

Variance obtains the spread precisely, whereas entropy does not obtain spread.

In multimodel distributions, Variance is not suitable and Entropy is preferred.

Thus, the preferece between Variance and Entropy is as follows:

In the case of unimodal distributions, Variance is used. Otherwise, Entropy is employed.

When I am computing structure factor values of a lattice, I am confused as to how some of the planes are classified. Hi there! Could someone please answer this for me? I would greatly appreciate it, and will totally like your answer! Length isn't necessarily important, just needs to be accurate and such. Thanks in advance!!!!!!! (I am supposed to include references when using examples, or include the link from where you got it and I can format the reference). A question that I struggled with is listed below. I understand that in the forest there is a vast number of trees, but I thought they could be counted, not easily, but could definitely be counted.  Typically, once I go back to the chapter and review data on a question that I’ve missed I can see why I would have gotten the answer wrong but after re-reading the definition of continuous and discrete data I am still confused. If trees in...
