This week, we are studying a type of continuous probability distribution that is called a normal distribution. One real-life example of a normal distribution is IQ score. The mean of this distribution is 100 with a standard deviation of 15.

For this week's discussion, do a little research and share another real life example of a normal distribution, including information about the mean and standard deviation. Post a diagram to share with the class.

Answer #1

Height is a daily life example of normal distribution.

height of a population is an example normal distribution. Many people in a certain population are having average height. The no of people taller and shorter than the average height people is almost equal, and a very small number of people are either extremely tall or extremely short. However, height is not a single characteristic, several genetic and other factors decides height.Hence it follows the normal distribution.

mean = 171 cm and standard deviation = 4 (for men)

mean = 159.5 and standard deviation = 2 (for women)

Another type of distribution is the normal curve or sometimes called the bell curve. If a distribution has a normal curve, it is symmetrical with most of the probabilities located near the mean. Many test scores are based on a bell curve. An example of a bell curve is population IQ. The mean of the population is 100 with a standard deviation of 15. For this week's discussion, do a little research and share another real life example of a...

Week 7 Discussion The Normal Distribution, also called the Gaussian Distribution, is a representation of the distribution of many different types of data, especially when considering large amounts of data. Some examples of data that are normally distributed are IQ scores, heights, blood pressure measurements and GPAs. The empirical rule, along with the Normal Distribution provides information about the data that is easy to calculate. Follow this link to understand the empirical rule: For Discussion #2, find an example of...

This week we study Normal Distribution. Part 1. Demonstrate that you understand basic concept of Normal Distribution. In two small paragraphs describe a couple of properties/rules of Normal distribution. Give one example of some practical case where we can use Normal distribution (for instance, IQ scores follow a normal distribution of probabilities with the mean IQ of 100 and a standard deviation around the mean of about 15 IQ points.) Part 2. Assign your numbers for mean μ and standard...

battery life follows a normal continuous probability distribution with a population mean = 300 hours and a population standard deviation of 30 hours. Give me a real-life example of a data distribution that you think is approximately normal, but with a large spread (i.e. large standard deviation). Use Google or other research methods to find the mean and standard deviation to support your claim. What reasons or conditions attribute to the large variation? (Here's my example: income - some people make minimum wage, some people make $134M over 4 years. Think of another example and do some research to find the standard deviation,...
