A gourmet grocery store sells an average of 17 jars of pickled sardines per month. What is the probability that for any given month 21 or more jars, ≥ 21 , will be sold? What is the discrete probability distribution used for this problem?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

This is a poisson distribution

µ = 17 per month

P(X = x) = e * µx / x!

P(X > 21) = 1 - (P(X = 0) + P(X = 1) + P(X = 2) + ... + P(X = 20))

                = 1 - (e-17 * 170 / 0! + e-17 * 171 / 1! + e-17 * 172 / 2! + .. + e-17 * 1720 / 20!)

                = 1 - 0.8055

                = 0.1945

The discrete probability distribution used for this problem i s poisson distribution
