Fight Covid is a new startup company that provides consultancy to Health Canada regarding the current pandemic. The company is currently collecting data to study if people with different blood types have different levels of resistance against getting infected by COVID-19 across Canada. Their current data includes information from 1000 patients, 300 of whom are located in Alberta. According to the collected data, 1/3 of Alberta patients have blood type A+. Furthermore, in total, there are 450 patients with blood type A+ and half of them are in Quebec. Answer the following questions, given that 340 patients in Ontario have either A- or AB blood types. (Other blood types are not included in this problem.)

Note/Hint: Use the following contingency table (as needed) to answer the questions. You do not have to fully complete the table, but it will likely help!

*For all of Question 18, show your answer in ratio format.

For example, 3/4, instead of 0.75.

Question 18-1 : What is the probability that a randomly selected patient is in Ontario?

Question 18-2 : If we randlomly select a patient with blood type A+, what is the probability that the patient is from Alberta?

Question 18-3 : What is the probability that a randomly selected patient has blood type A+ or lives in Alberta?

Question 18-4 : If we randlomly select a patient from Quebec, what is the probability that the patient has blood type A- or AB?

Answer #1
A+ A-or AB Total
Alberta 100 200 300
Quebec 225 10 235
Ontario 125 340 465
Total 450 550 1000

1. Every two seconds someone in America needs blood. It is important that hospitals have the right types of quality blood to meet the patient needs. Blood donation centers help hospitals meet this demand. There are four main blood groups: A, B, AB, and O, of which O is the most common. One of the less common blood types is B+. In the United States, only 9% of the population has B+ blood type. Assume that 5 donors arrive to...
