Suppose you had a telephone directory listing all the businesses in a city, alphabetized by type of business. If you wanted to phone 100 of them to get a representative sampling of opinion on some issue, how would you select which 100 to phone? Why would it not be a good idea to simply use the first 100 businesses listed?

If we wanted to phone 100 of them to get a representative sampling of opinion, we should randomly select samples from each alphabetical businesses i.e. we should randomly select 3-4 businesses starting with B, 3-4 from B and so on. In this way, we will have random samples from multiple businesses.

We should not select first 100 listed businesses as those can come from same business. So in order to have representative from all businesses, we should select samples from all alphabetical businesses.
