With restrictions already lifted on some non-essential businesses in California and partial restaurant re-openings possibly on the horizon, a majority of Californians still aren’t comfortable going out to eat. According to a new survey of 800 Californians, only 35% of respondents to an Emerson College/Nexstar Media poll, conducted May 8-10, said they would be comfortable dining out “with some spacing precautions,”

Which variable do you think makes more sense to use as the explanatory variable and which as the response variable?

The independent variable or explanatory variable will be “spacing precautions” and the response variable or the dependent variable will be "comfortable going out to eat"

Becuase pople going comfortably going out to eat will depend upon the spacing precatuions that are taken up by the restaurants. If the people feel that the spacing precautions are not proper or adequate, then they won't be comfortable going out to eat whereas if the spacing precautions are proper and adequate, then they will be comfortable going out to eat
