INDEPENDENT SAMPLES T-TESTS

  1. A behavioral researcher wished to determine whether or not 10 milligrams of Valium would have an effect on the scores of human subjects performing a task of psychomotor coordination. Thirty students were selected from a subject pool and an equal number assigned to Experimental (Valium) and Control conditions. All subjects in the Experimental Group received Valium thirty minutes prior to being tested. The subjects in the Control Condition received a placebo (inert substance) at the same time. Higher scores represent superior psychomotor coordination. Using an alpha of .05, perform an appropriate two-tailed test of the significance of the mean difference.

INDEPENDENT SAMPLES T-TESTS A researcher was interested in testing whether alertness levels differed in those who drank a cup of coffee versus those who drank an energy drink. She randomly assigned participants to one of the two conditions and then showed them a five-minute video. After the video, all participants completed a questionnaire measuring their memory for things that had been presented in the video. Higher scores = better recall. Perform an appropriate two-tailed test of the significance of the...

A researcher wants to determine whether or not a given drug has any effect on the scores of human subjects performing a task of ESP sensitivity. He randomly assigns his subjects to one of two groups. Nine hundred subjects in group 1 (the experimental group) receive an oral administration of the drug prior to testing. In contrast, 1000 subjects in group 2 (control group) receive a placebo (dummy).
