For the following, indicate what type of analysis (test) you would perform and what alternative hypothesis you are testing. If you think a directional test is appropriate, make sure you incorporate this in the alternative hypothesis. In your answer, please indicate 2 things: the type of analysis AND the alternative hypothesis
Important: You may not know how to do the correct analysis. If this is the case, simply write “talk to a statistician” or “I wasn't taught this” as the “Type of analysis” and do not provide an alternative hypothesis.
You try to figure out if the total length of male and female coral snakes is the same. You measure the lengths of 47 males and 51 females. What should you do?
We wish to compare whether the total length of male and female coral snakes is the same and have been provided with the lengths of 47 males and 51 females snakes.
Analysis required
We should perform a hypothesis test. Here the appropriate test would T-test for two Means – Unknown Population Standard Deviations." (We do not have prior information about population standard deviation of male and female coral snakes)
Alternative hypothesis
The alternative hypothesis would be that population mean length of male and female coral snakes is not the same i.e.
where 1 represents the mean length of male coral snakes and 2 represents the mean length of female coral snakes.
