Is "the weight of a lobster caught in Maine" classified as a discrete or continuous random variable and why?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Solution:

Answer is " Continuous random variable"

Because , this random variable can take any value within a certain range. The discrete random variable takes only particular values while a continuous random variable can take any value within a certain range.

e.g. The number of students in the classes , the number of heads in tossing 100 coins.

This random variables are discrete. We cant say that the number of students is 50.5 , or 30.75 It can take only particular values such as 50 , 60 , 30 etc.

Now consider the random variable "weight of newborn babies " , "height of a student in the class"

These random variables can take any values . 2.5 kg , 3.1kg , 1.9 kg etc

So , these are the continuous random variable.

Given random variable is "the weight of a lobster caught in Maine"

It is a continuous type random variable.
