Is it better to go to one fast server or several slower servers?
Would you rather go to a server that can process customers at a rate of 30 per hour or to a line feeding a five-server system that can serve 6 customers per hour? Assume an arrival rate of 25 customers per hour. Which do you choose and why?
This is really two problems that we will compare: M/M/1 vs. M/M/S. Start by writing down the information that you know, then plug in that information into the appropriate formulas from the class notes. For Wq and Ws, convert the results to minutes by multiplying by 60 min/hr but only use the values in hours in the formulas. For the M/M/s model, round / to one decimal place and obtain P0 and Lq from the Infinite Source Table on pages 826-827 of the text.
M/M/1
 = _________ = _________

P0 =
Lq =
Ls =
Wq =
Ws =
M/M/s
 = _________ / = _________ = _________ M = _________
P0 = __________
Lq = __________
Ls =
Wq =
Ws =
Which model is better, the M/M/1 or M/M/s?
Why?

Pete's Market is a small local grocery store with only one checkout counter. Assume that shoppers arrive at the checkout lane according to a Poisson probability distribution, with an arrival rate of 15 customers per hour. The checkout service times follow an exponential probability distribution, with a service rate of 25 customers per hour. The manager’s service goal is to limit the waiting time prior to beginning the checkout process to no more than five minutes. Also the manager of...

1. Willow Brook National Bank operates a drive-up teller window that allows customers to complete bank transactions without getting out of their cars. On weekday mornings, arrivals to the drive-up teller window occur at random, with an arrival rate of 6 customers per hour or 0.1 customers per minute. Also assume that the service times for the drive-up teller follow an exponential probability distribution with a service rate of 54 customers per hour, or 0.9 customers per minute. Determine the...
