In 2018 General Social Survey respondents were asked if they are satisfied with their job. Using the information from the SPSS output below answer the following question:

Are the differences in the average number of the highest years of school completed between those who are very satisfied, moderately satisfied, a little dissatisfied and very dissatisfied with their job (statistically) significant? [Do not run the test in SPSS. Use the SPSS output below].

1. State the null hypothesis (in words)

2. State the research hypothesis (in words)

3. Find F_critical (Step 3).

4. Calculate F_obtained using the intermediate results from ANOVA Table. (Hint: SPSS uses the same formula for calculation of F obtained as you have in the book).

5. Make Decision, Interpret Results (Step 5) and answer the problem’s question.

Answer 1

1. H₀: µ₁ = µ₂ = µ₃ = µ₄

2. H_a: At least one means is not equal

3. F_critical = 2.61

4. F_obtained = 111.210/3/14582.8838/1733 = 4.41

5. Since 4.41 > 2.61, we can reject the null hypothesis.

Therefore, we can conclude that there are differences in the average number of the highest years of school completed between those who are very satisfied, moderately satisfied, a little dissatisfied and very dissatisfied with their job.
