During the recent tour the France, the world’s best known athlete bicycles race, some cyclists have been expelled for attempting to enhance their performance by ‘blood doping’  with a synthetic hormone, erythropotein (EPO), that stimulates the production of oxygen-bearing (and fatigue inhibiting( red blood cell. Assume that a mental health investigator at a large clinic wants to determine whether EPO, viewed as a potential therapeutic tool, might allow severely depressed patients to better cope with their depression. Volunteer patients are randomly assigned to one of the two groups, a treatment group x1 that receive a prescribed amount of EPO and a control group that receives  an harmless neutral substance. Subsequent endurance scores are based on the total of time, in minutes, that each patients remains on a rapidly moving treadmill. The statistical score focuses on the difference between means endurance score for the treatment and control groups
