Cholesterol levels are measured for 28 heart attack patients (2 days after their attacks) and 30 other hospital patients who did not have a heart attack. It is thought that cholesterol levels will be higher for the heart attack patients, so a one-sided alternative hypothesis is used. For the 28 heart attack patients, the mean cholesterol level was 253.9 with a standard deviation of 47.7. For the 30 other hospital patients who did not have a heart attack, the mean cholesterol level was 193.1 with a standard deviation of 22.3. At 3% SL, is there any difference between those two groups? Apply one-sided test.

Answer #1

As we are testing here whether the cholesterol levels will be higher for the heart attack patients, therefore the null and the alternative hypothesis here are given as:

The standard error here is computed as:

The test statistic here is computed as:

As the t statistic value here is very high, therefore the approximate p-value here is 0. Therefore 0 is the required p-value here. As the p-value is 0 < 0.03 which is the level of significance, therefore the test is significant and we can reject the null hypothesis here. Therefore we have sufficient evidence that the cholesterol levels will be higher for the heart attack patients.

High levels of cholesterol in the blood are associated with higher risk of heart attacks. Will using a drug to lower blood cholesterol reduce heart attacks? The Helsinki Heart Study looked at this question. Middle-aged men were assigned at random to one of two treatments: 2051 men took the drug gemfibrozil to reduce their blood cholesterol levels, and a control group of 2030 men took a placebo. During the next five years, 65 men in the gemfibrozil group and 84...

A special diet is intended to reduce the cholesterol of patients at risk of heart disease. If the diet is effective, the target is to have the average cholesterol of this group be below 200. After six months on the diet, an SRS of 150 patients at risk for heart disease had an average cholesterol level of 192 with a standard deviation of 21. Construct a 95% confidence interval for the average cholesterol level of patients at risk for heart...

A researcher conducted a study to determine if aspirin reduces the chance of a heart attack. He randomly assigned 250 patients to take aspirin every day and 250 patients to take a placebo every day. After a certain length of time he reported the number of heart attacks in the patients who took aspirin every day and in those who did not take aspirin every day. What is the most important reason for the researcher to randomly assign patients to...

The distribution of blood cholesterol level in the population of all male patients tested in a large hospital over a 10-year period is close to Normal with mean 224 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) and standard deviation σ = 42 mg/dL. You measure the blood cholesterol of 14 male patients 20--34 years of age. The mean level is x = 195 mg/dL. Is the mean μ for all young men aged 20--34 who have been patients in the hospital different than...

Too much cholesterol in the blood increases the risk of heart diseases. Young women are generally less afflicted with high cholesterol than other groups. The cholesterol levels for women aged 20 to 34 follow an approximately normal distribution with mean 190 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl) and standard deviation 41 mg/dl. (a) Cholesterol levels above 270 mg/dl demand medical attention. What percent of young women have levels above 270 mg/dl? (b) Levels above 220 mg/dl are considered borderline high. What percent...

A serum cholesterol level above 250 mg/dl of blood is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease in humans.  At a medical center in St. Louis, a study to test the effectiveness of new cholesterol-lowering drug was conducted.  One hundred people with cholesterol levels between 250 mg/dl and 300 mg/dl were available for this study.  Fifty people were assigned at random to each of two treatment groups.  One group received the standard cholesterol-lowering medication and the other group received the new drug.  After taking the drug...
