12,−6,−7,−9,4,0

Determine the median of the given data.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Median is the middle most observation of data set. Now calculation process for median is at first we arrange the data in increasing order.

Let, the total no of data is n

Now if n is odd then n/2 th observation is median and if n is even then any value in between n/2 th observation and ((n/2)+1) th observation is median. And then for simplicity we take median is mean of this two observation.

Here,

First we have to arrange the data in increasing order.

-9, - 7, - 6,0,4,12

Now the total no. of observation is 6 i.e even. So the medians will be lie in between 6/2 =3rd and (6/2)+1=4th observation of the data after arranging in increasing order

Hence the medians is lie in between - 6 and 0

i.e for simplicity we take median is mean of -6 and 0

Hence,

Median= (-6+0)/2 = -3
