Want to know if increasing levels of movie violence increases viewer aggression. Three groups of subjects are randomly selected and assigned to groups. All groups view a 30-minute motion picture, but in each version of the movie there are a different number of violent scenes. Following the movie, all subjects are given the TAT (Thematic Apperception Test) and scored on the amount of fantasy aggression displayed, high scores indicating higher levels of aggression.

Within Groups 201.1667 51 3.944444
Total 460.0926 53

F = 32.8216

you can take alpha = 0.05

p-value = 0.0000 < alpha

hence you reject the null hypothesis

we conclude that there is difference in mean

Researchers want to know if playing violent video games increases aggression levels. They know that the typical teenager scores an average of μ = 4 on a test of aggression. To evaluate their hypothesis, they take a random sample of n = 5 teenagers and have them play violent video games for two hours. After playing the games the teenagers then are measured with the aggression test, resulting in the following scores: X 4 7 5 6 6 (a) Identify...

A warden is interested in the ability of two different violence reduction programs to reduce violent interactions in her prison. To test for differences, the warden randomizes two groups implementing one program to each group. The amount of violent interactions per inmate is presented below. Using α = .05, perform an independent sample t test of significance. Program A Program B 9 8 7 5 7 8 5 3 8 4 7 9 6 6 7 7 8 7 3...

A medical researcher wishes to try three different techniques to lower cholesterol levels of patients with high cholesterol levels. The subjects are randomly selected and assigned to one of three groups. Group 1 is given medication, Group 2 is given an exercise program, and Group 3 is assigned a diet program. At the end of six weeks, each subject's cholesterol level is recorded. Determine the test statistic F-value to test the hypothesis that there is no difference among the means....

Correctional services were interested in evaluating a cognitive-behavioural based intervention designed to reduce violence and offending. A group of researchers assigned nine offenders on parole into a control group for one year and recorded the number of violent incidents perpetrated by the offenders. Then, these offenders were given the intervention for one year and the number of violent incidents perpetrated by the offenders was recorded following the treatment. The researchers are interested in testing whether the treatment had any effect...

Part II: Within-Subjects Design In the within-subjects design, researchers were interested in whether participants could lower their cholesterol levels by changing from a diet higher in trans fats to one with no trans fats. Ten research participants were selected. A baseline measure of cholesterol was taken from each. They were then put on a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and devoid of trans fats for one month. At the end of that month, blood cholesterol was again measured and...

What makes a joke funny? Freud theorized that people find jokes funnier when the jokes contain higher levels of sexuality or hostility. Kirsh and Olczak (2001) questioned whether gender impacts this relationship. The data below are representative of the women in their study. The researchers hypothesized that because women find violence less humorous than do men, there is a negative relationship between the level of violence in a comic book (1 = low to 7 = high) and how humorous...
