The two required condition for a discrete probability distribution are:

i. f(x) < 1 for all values of x

ii. ∑f(x) = 1 for all values of x

Answer #1

Dear student, 1st condition is wrong and 2nd is right.

The probability mass function, f(x) = P(X = x), of a discrete random variable X has the following condition to become a pmf :

  1. All probabilities are positive: f(x) ≥ 0. and any event in the distribution has a probability of happening of between 0 and 1
  2. The sum of all probabilities is always 1. That is Σf(x) =1
