The standard deviation of babies born full term in the US is 14 oz. For a given region a sample size 44 had an average of 7.7 lbs (keep in mind that there are 16 oz in 1 lb.

Assuming independence of births find a 90% confidence interval for the true average weight for babies in that region. Report the lower bound only.

Round to 2 decimal places.

Answer #1

Given,

= 7.7 lbs = 7.7 * 16 = 123.2 oz

= 14 oz

90% confidence interval for is

- Z/2 * / sqrt(n) < < + Z/2 * / sqrt(n)

123.2 - 1.645 * 14 / sqrt(44) < < 123.2 + 1.645 * 14 / sqrt(44)

119.73 < < 126.67

Lower bound = 119.73
