A researcher is testing the effectiveness of a new herbal supplement that claims to improve memory performance.  A sample of n = 25 college students is obtained and each student takes the supplement daily for six week.  At the end of the 6-week period, each student is given a standardized memory test and the average score for the sample is M = 39.  For the general population of college students, the distribution of test scores is normal with a mean of µ = 35 and a standard deviation of σ  =15.  Do students taking the supplement have significantly better memory scores?

A nutrition store in the mall is selling "Memory Booster," which is a concoction of herbs and minerals that is intended to improve memory performance. To test the effectiveness of the herbal mix, a researcher obtains a sample of n = 16 people and asks each person to take the suggested dosage each day for four weeks. At the end of the four-week period, each individual takes a standardized memory test. The scores from the sample produce a mean of...

Suppose a researcher wanted to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel meditation program to lower test anxiety in students attending university. Because she knows the program will not increase anxiety she has a directional hypothesis. For the general population of university students, scores on a standardized test anxiety assessment forms a normal distribution with µ = 40 and σ = 8. If she randomly selects one student to try the program, what raw score on the test anxiety assessment would...

A researcher would like to determine whether an over-the-counter cold medication has an effect on mental alertness.  A sample of n = 16 participants is obtained, and each person is given a standard dose of the medication one hour before being tested in a driving simulation task.  For the general population, reaction time scores on the simulation task are normally distributed with μ = 210 and σ = 20.  The individuals in the sample had an average score of M = 222.             a....
