An oil company has developed a new viscofier drilling fluid material used to increase the yield point (YP) . The company conducted a pilot test on 50 samples of mud. The results showed that the average increase in (YP) was 10 lb/100ft^2 . Assume this follow a normal distribution with sample standard deviation of 6. We want to see if there is evidence that the new viscofier material maximize the YP by greater than 8 lb/100ft^2 . Conduct a hypothesis test using significance level α=0.05 to test this.

Test statistics

t = ( - ) / ( S / sqrt (n ) )

= ( 10 - 8) / ( 6 / sqrt(50) )

= 2.36

df = n - 1 = 50 - 1 = 49

From T table,

t critical value at 0.05 significance level with 49 df = 1.677

Since test statistics > 1.677, Reject H0.

We conclude that we have sufficient evidece to support the claim that the new viscofier material

maximize the YP by greater than 8 lb/100ft2
