In a long-term study about coffee consumption, age, and memory, a researcher gathered N=10 participants. The researcher gave the participants a list of words to remember, and asked them how many of these words can be recalled 2 hours later. On day 1, participants were told to come in, but refrain from drinking any caffeinated drinks at least 24h prior to the testing session. On day 2, participants were told to come in, and consumed one cup of coffee prior to start remembering the word list. On day 3, participants were told to come in, and consumed two cups of coffee prior to start remembering the word list. On day 4, participants were told to come in, and consumed three cups of coffee prior to start remembering the world list. All participants were tested once when they were an adolescent, and once more when they were an adult (20 years later).

Answer #1

There can be a variety of research questions: Whether drinking coffee has an effect on memory? Whether age has an effect on memory? How does drinking coffee and age interact ?

The IVs are: Age group of the participant (two levels: Adult or adolescent), Cups of coffee consumed (ordinal variable taking values 1 upto 3)

Age group is a subject characteristics variable while cups of coffee is manipulated.

The dependent variable is: The number of words that can be recalled after 2 hours.

In a study about dieting and weight loss, N=80 subjects were gathered to participate. All of the participants were approximately 20-25% overweight (from their ideal weight), with no habits of exercising. The researchers randomly assigned these participants into four different categories: participants in Category I (N=20) ate the traditional low-caloric diet, participants in Category II (N=20) ate the ketogenic diet, participants in Category III (N=20) were told to eat whatever they want as if they were not on a diet...

A researcher is interested in the effects of a new mnemonic strategy on short-term memory in 70 year-olds. She wants to include both those who are diagnosed as being in the mild stage of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) as well as 70 year-olds who have no diagnosable level of memory impairment. So, she will have 4 groups of 70 year-olds. One with no cognitive impairment that receives no intervention, one with no cognitive impairment that receives the training with the new...

Participants in each group were given a list of 20 nouns to memorize for 15 minutes. Participants were then given a 15- minute break and then asked to write down/recall as many of the...

As you saw from the lab PowerPoint slides last week, you will be doing a research study looking at ‘Aggression Priming” for your first paper. For this week’s discussion, I want you to discuss with your group what you think this study is about. What is the hypothesis? What theory does it come from? What do you predict will happen (do you expect something different than the hypothesis in the researcher instructions? If so, what and why?)? Do you think...
