Which statistical test should be used in the following scenario? A researcher assessed the level of a particular hormone in the blood of five patients before and after they begin taking a hormone treatment program. The research question was: Was there a significant change in the level of this (named) hormone following the treatment program? This hormone is measured in nanograms per deciliter (ng/dl).

Answer #1

The most appropriate test in this scenario will be:

This test will apply since we have two samples that are dependent (paired or matched). The test required two dependent samples, which are actually paired or matched and we are dealing with repeated measures (measures taken from the same subjects) like in this scenario we have a group of five patients before and after they begin taking a hormone treatment program. Since they are the same participants, therefore this test will be most appropriate.

For each of the following hypothetical situations, you are to indicate which type of test statistic you should use (choosing from single sample z, single sample t, independent samples t, or paired t). Also for each, you need to indicate your rationale for selecting that particular test.
