From a standard deck of cards two cards are chosen without replacement one at a time. Find the probability of drawing a face card given that the first card was red.(EXPLAIN)

Answer #1

52 cards are in a standard deck

We draw two cards without replacement.

We need to find the following probability:

P(Second card drawn is face card/ first card drawn is red)

Two scenarios possible:

  • The first card drawn is a red face card, the chance of that happening is 6/26. If it is a red face card then the probability of drawing a face card on the second turn will be 11/52 (-1 for the already drawn face card)
  • The first card drawn is a red non-face card, the chance of that happening is 20/26. If it is a red non-face card then the probability of drawing a face card on the second turn will be 12/52
