A number of studies have related the size of the hippocampus, the brain region involved in memory and stress, to the risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Previous studies have indicated that individuals with small hippocampi are more likely to develop chronic forms of stress disorder. The hippocampi of 16 veterans of the Gulf War who were suffering from PTSD were measured using magnetic resonance imaging. The researchers calculate that x bar =1.5 cm3   and that s=0.25 cm3 .

If the average size for the hippocampus in the general population is  cm 3 , do the above data support the conclusions of the earlier studies? Perform a hypothesis test by following the five steps below. Use the critical value approach. Do not find a p-value.

  1. State the appropriate alternative hypothesis for this test
  2. Compute the appropriate test statistic
  3. State the critical value(s)
  4. State your decision to reject or not reject
  5. State your conclusion

In a study of parents who have children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), 120 parents were asked to rate their overall stress level using the Parental Stress Scale (PSS). A higher score on the PSS scale indicates greater stress. The average stress level from the sampled parents was 52.98. The standard deviation of stress levels for the population of parents who have children with ADHD is known to be 10.34. Does the data provide convincing evidence that parents who...

7. Measures of effect size for the repeated-measures t Previous studies have shown that playing video games can increase visual perception abilities on tasks presented in the gaming zone of the screen (within 5 degrees of the center). A graduate student is interested in whether playing video games increases peripheral visual perception abilities or decreases attention to peripheral regions because of focus on the gaming zone. For his study, he selects a random sample of 64 adults. The subjects complete...

MTH 241 COMMON DATA ANALYSIS ASSIGNMENT (Fall 2018) Previous studies have shown that urban bus drivers have an extremely stressful job, and a large proportion of drivers retire prematurely with disabilities due to occupational stress. These stresses come from a combination of physical and social sources such as traffic congestion, incessant time pressure, and unruly passengers. In the paper, “Hassles on the Job: A Study of a Job Intervention with Urban Bus Drivers” (Journal of Organizational Behavior, Vol. 20, pp....
