A parametric test is a kind of a statistical test in which we make certain assumptions regarding the parameter(s) of a population, the distribution of which is known to us from beforehand. It is mainly carried out on interval or ratio data.

A non-parametric test is a kind of statistical test in which we don't make any assumptions regarding the population parameter(s), since its distribution is completely unknown to us. It is mainly carried out on nominal or ordinal data.
