Answer #1

A statistical hypothesis test is the testing procedure based on a sample that helps to determine whether the characteristic of the population of interest is in accordance with the sample or not. To perform this testing procedure, we allocate sample from the population of interest for the test then the statistic for the population parameter is calculated. The value of the test statistic is calculated using the testing method and compared with the critical value of the distribution of the test statistic based on the significance level. If the test statistic is greater than the critical value, the null hypothesis which says that there is no difference in the characteristic of the population and the claim which is against the null hypothesis is rejected.

With your newly-developed statistical tools, you decide to put this hypothesis to the test. You know that the standard intelligence quotient (IQ) score has a population mean of 100 with a standard deviation of 15. You find that a random sample of 121 Lakers fans has an average IQ score of 103. Use this evidence to test your roommate’s argument that Lakers fans are more intelligent than the general population.
