Define , X : Dosage of the drug prescribed to each patient .

Y : Decrease in pulse rates .

Now , in order to draw the scatter plot , the points for the random variable X is plotted on the X-axis of the rectangular cartesian coordinate . The points for the random variable Y corresponding to each value of the variable X is then plotted in the graph for that value of Y given in the Y-axis . For the example given here , the scatter plot is given below :
