3. A new hip replacement procedure is being evaluated at a big research hospital. This new procedure is less expensive; however, it might lead to a longer recovery time. A study was conducted to compare this new procedure with the current procedure. A randomly sample of 15 patients were operated on with the current procedure, and another sample of 12 patients were operated with the new procedure. The average and standard deviation of the recovery time for the sample that was treated with the current procedure are 35 days and 7.5 days, respectively. The average and standard deviation for the recovery time for the sample that was operated with the new procedure 39 days and 6.2 days, respectively. Is there enough evidence to conclude that, on average, patients who undergo a hip replacement using the new procedure need more time to recover? Test at α = 0.01. Use the critical value/rejection point method.

The Elgin Heart Institute performs many open-heart surgery procedures. Recently research physicians at Elgin have developed a new heart bypass surgery procedure that they believe will reduce the average recovery time. The hospital board will not recommend the new procedure unless there is substantial evidence to suggest that it is better than the existing procedure. Records indicate that the current mean recovery rate for the standard procedure is 42 days. The recovery times for a sample of 36 patients using...

Typically, elderly patients with hip fractures may have long recovery times. At one hospital, the average amount of time that elderly patients with hip fractures would spend in the hospital before they could be released to home care was 15 days. A new physiotherapy program is developed and researchers want to see if this new program gives recovery times that are different than the typical average amount. A random sample of 12 patients was enrolled in the new program and...
