A researcher wishes to test the mean body temperature against the accepted value of 98.6. If a sample of 26 subjects had an average temperature of 98.4 with a standard deviation of 0.6, what conclusion should be reached? Use a significant level of 0.10

Answer #1

H0: = 98.6

Ha: 98.6

Test statistics

t = - / S / sqrt(n )

= 98.4 - 98.6 / 0.6 / sqrt(26)

= -1.70

Critical values at 0.10 level with 25 df = -1.708 , 1.708

Since test statistics falls in non-rejection region, do not reject H0.

We conclude at 0.10 level that we fail to support the claim.

John wishes to study the mean human body temperature. John organizes a simple random sample which allows him to measure the human body temperature of 45 people at school. His calculations show that his sample has a mean human body temperature of 98.40°F and a standard deviation of 0.62°F. Prior studies indicate that human body temperatures are normally distributed with a standard deviation of 0.50°F. Use the p-value method and a 2% significance level to test the claim that the...

5. Suppose that a doctor claims that 17 year olds have an average body temperature that is higher than the commonly accepted average human temperature of 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. A simple random statistical sample of 25 people, each of age 17, is selected. The average temperature of the 17 year olds is found to be 98.9 degrees, with standard deviation of 0.6 degrees. Test the doctor’s claim under 5% significant level.

A medical researcher attempted to learn if a disease is accompanied by an increased in body temperature. She measured the body temperature of 12 people diagnosed as having the disease and obtained the following temperatures (in degrees F): 99.3, 99.1, 100.4, 98.4, 98.2, 98.9, 99.7, 100.1, 100.7, 99.0, 98.8, 99.2. Does the mean body temperature of these individuals differ from a hypothesized population mean of 98.6 degree F? Use a two-tailed test and a 0.05 significance level
