"Does the difference between the two trial times depend on gender?"

Trial time 1 in seconds, trial time 2 in seconds and gender (M/F).

What hypothesis test is used and why?

Answer #1

t test for comparison of two population means can be a suitable test here.

The hypothesis will be-

Null:There is No difference in means of difference between two trial times for men and women.

Alternative:There is significant difference in means of difference between two trail times for men and women.

Once we have sample available with us, we can calculate sample mean of difference of times for men and women separately. Compute the test statistic and compare with critical value.

Here the only assumption is that difference in times should come from Normal population.

If this assumption is not satisfied, we can refer to some Non parametric tests.
